The features of Croatian cuisine



Every region of Croatia has its own specific culinary tradition. It dates back to ancient times.


The differences in the selection of food and ways of cooking are most notable between those in mainland and those in coastal regions.


Mainland cuisine is more characterized by the earlier Slavs and the more recent contacts with neighboring cultures, using lard for cooking, and spices such as black pepper ,pepper and garlic.


The sea region bears the influences of the Greek and Roman cuisine, as well as of the later Mediterranean cuisine, in particular Italian. This cuisine cooks with olive oil, and herbs and spices such as rosemary, sage, bay leaf, oregano, marjoram, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, lemon and orange rind.


Croatian cuisine can be divided into a few regional cuisines which all have their specific cooking traditions, characteristic for the area and not necessarily well known in other parts of Croatia. Most dishes, however, can be found all across the country, with their local variants. Each region can make changes in any dish so they may vary through the country.


Despite the variations of cuisine, meat and seafood are popular in every region.


The most popular meat dishes are mixd meat or grilled skewers, steak , lamb and many others. Meat can be roasted, fried, grilled or stewed.


Seafood is a cuisine sign of Croatia. The number of seafood dishes is incredible. They include squids that can be grilled, fried or stuffed, octopus salad, cuttlefish risotto, tuna, shrimps and others.


Another popular dish in Croatia is pasta. It is one of the most frequently cooked food items in Croatian cuisine. Pasta with tomato sauce is the main type. The other popular sauces include creamy mushroom sauce, minced meat sauce and many others.


This is far not the whole list of Croatian popular dishes. But for every meal it is recommended by gourmands to have a glass of Croatian wine: whether red or white – it depends on food.
